“We’ve Been Around” Celebrates Transgender Pioneers!
Princess Grace Film Honoraria, Rhys Ernst makes trans-history in his new docu-drama “We’ve Been Around.” This emotionally charged six-part series, that premiered exclusively across three Time Inc. websites – People.com, EW.com, and Essence.com – as well as on Advocate.com today, chronicles the lives of transgender pioneers who have made an impact on history with their truly inspiring stories. “The trans movement may be making headlines, but our rich history is often overlooked,” explains Rhys, co-producer of Amazon’s Emmy-nominated web-series, Transparent. “Trans people have always existed, and have lived many different lives."
The stories of Albert Cashier, a trans-man who fought in the Civil War, Lucy Hicks Anderson, a trans-woman of color who thrived during the Prohibition, Little Axe, a gospel singer who sang his way to success and Lou Sullivan, an AIDS activist are the brave souls highlighted in this series and, who are the unwitting warriors who paved the way for future generations.
“We’ve Been Around,” is the extraordinary work of a talented team from the trans community. In addition to Rhys, who directed and produced the show, the team includes Transparent actress Alexandra Billings; writer and filmmaker Susan Stryker; activist Riki Wilchins; and trans historian Monica Roberts. It is up for 2016 Emmy consideration and needs your vote! Watch the episodes here!
